Planning your first trip to Europe is incredibly exciting but can feel a bit overwhelming, especially with all the little things to think about before stepping foot on the continent. Having lived in Spain for four years and now as a travel advisor with extensive experience in European travel, I can tell you firsthand what essentials are worth buying and then packing. Here’s my must buy guide to help you prepare for an unforgettable European adventure.
1. Universal Travel Adapter and Voltage Converter
European outlets and voltage differ from those in many other countries. A universal travel adapter with multiple ports and a voltage converter if your electronics aren’t dual voltage (especially for items like hair tools) is essential.

2. Comfortable, Stylish Walking Shoes
European cities are often best explored on foot, with cobblestone streets that add charm but are rough on your feet. Prioritize stylish comfort—Europeans favor a chic, casual look, so consider neutral-colored sneakers mostly white or versatile flats that look good and offer support.
3. Portable Power Bank
European sightseeing days can be long, especially if you’re using your phone for maps, photos, and recommendations. A compact, high-capacity power bank is a lifesaver.

4. Crossbody Bag (Anti-Theft Features)
In crowded spots like Paris, Rome, Venice or Barcelona, a crossbody bag with anti-theft features gives peace of mind. Look for bags with lockable zippers and RFID-blocking technology to protect your valuables.
5. Reusable Water Bottle
Water is pricey in European tourist zones, so save money and reduce waste by bringing a reusable water bottle. Many places offer refill stations, and in some cities, you can refill from public fountains. I like the foldable ones that don’t take up much room. Link: https://amzn.to/3Yv3HRF
6. Layered Clothing and Packable Rain Jacket
Europe’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Even in the summer, temperatures can vary widely. A lightweight, packable rain jacket is a lifesaver in case of unexpected rain showers, especially in places like London or Amsterdam.
7. European eSIM Plan or SIM card
Unless you have a solid international plan expect paying around $10 a day. I suggest buying a local SIM card or eSIM plan can make staying connected much cheaper. Europe’s connectivity options are often excellent, so this can help you avoid sky-high roaming fees. +Always turn your data roaming off! Recommend: https://www.airalo.com/
8. Language Phrasebook or Translation App
Though many Europeans speak English, locals appreciate it very much when you make an effort. A small phrasebook or translation app can be helpful for simple phrases like “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” in the local language—it makes a big difference! Recommend: duolingo, babbel, google translate (free)
9. Lightweight Packing Cubes
Staying organized is key to maximizing your suitcase space, and packing cubes are perfect for this. Group your outfits and keep things neat, which is especially helpful if you’re hopping from one city to another. Packing Cube Compression Link: https://amzn.to/3AGKtQy

10. City Cards or Attraction Passes
Some cities, like Paris, Florence, Switzerland (SBB APP) and London (London Pass), offer passes that give discounted or free access to major attractions and public transportation. These can be ordered in advance or purchased upon arrival, but research before you go to see if they’ll save you time and money.
Bonus Tips for First-Time Travelers:
- Passport Expiration + Security: Always keep your passport in a secure spot, and consider a digital backup. I recommend an RFID-blocking passport holder for an extra layer of security. Make sure your passport is not expired for 6 months after your return.
- Currency Planning: Euros are the standard in many European countries, but others (like the UK, Poland and Switzerland) use different currencies. Having a small amount of cash on hand is helpful, though cards are widely accepted.
- Download Google Maps Offline: Download maps of cities or regions you’ll be visiting to access them without data—ideal for navigating and discovering spots beyond the tourist zones.
- If you do not have Global Entry to come back to the USA – download the APP Mobile Passport Control: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/mobile-passport-control
- Book everything you can in advance especially trains (the rates go up the closer you get to travel date) and all your excursions. Private transfers can be planned ahead or I like to use uber/free now/cabify/welcome pickups
With these essentials, you’ll be set for a smooth, enjoyable, and well-prepared trip to Europe. Safe travels and planning, and savor every moment! I would love the opportunity to help you plan your dream itinerary to Europe.
